YAMWI & SEJL HOSTING MENTAL HEALTH CLASS
FOR HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT

Yankton –
Mental Health Care and Careers in Our Community is the title of a
summer class being offered in Yankton for high school students to earn a
half-credit!
Participants will learn about mental health disorders through
interaction with the local mental health system of service delivery.
Students will participate in tours of human service provider agencies
within the community. The class will include discussion with area
professionals practicing in the diverse areas of mental health
occupations. Students will also attend the 13th Annual YAMWI
Conference to be held at Mount Marty College on June 8 & 9, 2011, which
is recognized as the region’s premier mental wellness conference.
Yankton
Area Mental Wellness, Inc. (YAMWI), in cooperation with Southeast Job
Link (SEJL), proudly announces that this high school class will be
offered to promote Mental Health Care and Careers In Our Community.
Health care careers are some of the fastest growing occupations across
the nation and the Yankton community is recognized as a regional leader
in providing professional medical care. Successful completion of this
class should support students’ career decisions and their future pursuit
of health-related occupations.
Mental
Health Care and Careers In Our Community class dates are June 1, 2,
3, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, 2011. The class will be based out of Southeast
Job Link, 1200 West 21st Street , Yankton.
Yankton
High School students successfully completing the class will be eligible
for an elective half-credit, which has been approved with unanimous
support by the Yankton School District Board. Students from other
districts may also be eligible for credit, pending approval by their
school; call for more information.
Class size
is limited. Pre-registration and pre-payment of the $50 fee is
required; scholarships may be available for students having financial
need.

2010 MENTAL
WELLNESS AWARDS PRESENTED

(Yankton) Yankton Area
Mental Wellness, Inc (YAMWI) presented awards to key supporters
promoting mental health services within the community and across the
region. The awards were presented during the Twelfth Annual Mental
Wellness Conference, held on June 9 & 10, 2010, at Mount Marty College.
The YAMWI Board of Directors Award recognized Michael R. Miranda. The
Conference Theme Award “Counting on YOU to Make a Difference” was
presented to Carla Hummel, Director of Volunteer Services at Avera
Sacred Heart Hospital. The Professional Leadership Award was presented
to Charles Barron. The Mental Wellness Community Service Award was
presented to the Yankton Children’s Mental Health Fund. The awards were
presented by Pam Kettering, Executive Director of United Way and
Volunteer Services of Yankton and Matt Michels, Avera Health. Both
Kettering and Michels are members of the Yankton Area Mental Wellness,
Inc Board of Directors.

2009 MENTAL
WELLNESS AWARDS PRESENTED

Mental Wellness Conference, held on June 3 & 4, 2009, at Mount Marty
College. The YAMWI Board of Directors Award recognized Dr. Alan Brevik.
The Conference Theme Award “Celebrating the Stars Among Us” reflected
the contributions by Lewis & Clark Behavioral Health Services, Inc. The
Professional Leadership Award was presented to Betty Viau. The Mental
Wellness Community Service Award was presented to the Yankton Hy-Vee
Food Store. The awards were presented by Thomas Stanage, Executive
Director of Lewis & Clark Behavioral Health Services, Inc and Matt
Michels, Avera Health. Both Stanage and Michels are members of the
Yankton Area Mental Wellness, Inc Board of Directors.

YAMWI
HOSTED ANTI-VIOLENCE TRAINING
Held October 1-3, 2008

Yankton - Yankton Area Mental Wellness, Inc., with a grant from the
Avera Health Foundation, hosted training for ACT: Adults and Children
together against violence. ACT is a national anti-violence initiative
that emphasizes community involvement, strengthening families, and
positive parenting as critical ways to create safe and healthy
environments that protect children and youth from violence and other
behavior problems.
